SDN has the potential to become a viable architecture for enabling cloud services along with NFV as well.

The SDN Control Layer logically centralizes network state and topology to unleash innovative control, allowing carriers to compete more effectively in the rapidly changing landscape. Unlike the data center, carrier networks, especially transport, are more complex, latency and failure sensitive as well. A single fault may affect thousands of customers.

In this presentation, we examine how an open and intelligent network control framework can be developed around OpenDaylight for carrier-scale applications. First, we will examine the key Control Layer requirements for the carrier environment, and contrast them vs. the Data Center. Next we will address the implications of Openness to the carrier customers. Finally, a snapshot will be provided on our implementation plans and status.
