An Affinity API for OpenDaylight, Suchi Raman, Plexxi

SDN centralizes the network control plane and provides a singleintegration point from which the overall network can becontrolled. The Northbound APIs of the SDN controller are the means bywhich different network service applications, such as basicconnectivity, security, monitoring, and traffic engineering willinteract with the network. To enable broad adoption of these APIs itbecomes essential to choose and ultimately standardize the rightabstraction for this interface. The significance of this interface isanalogous to the POSIX API for operating systems.  Existing flow-basedabstractions in Open Daylight are well matched to packet switchessince they represent capabilities of forwarding plane.  However theydo not adequately model end-user application conversations and thepolicies that govern them.

The Affinity metadata API is a declarative way of representing thequalitative requirements of end user application’s conversations tothe SDN controller.  Affinity is conveyed in terms of groups ofendpoints (affinity groups) and conversations (affinity links) and thetype of network path required by them -- allowing the controller tooptimize the overall network while meeting the demands of individualapplications.  We will describe the affinity API available in thefirst release of the Open Daylight network controller and proceed todemonstrate its use within the context of a network securityapplication (Defense4All) requiring fine grained path control.
