For over a year, we at EIG/Bluehost have been successfully utilizing Software-Defined-Networking (SDN) technology in one of our largest data centers. We have been efficiently managing more than 20,000 compute nodes with over 30,000 virtual machines in the framework of OpenStack. However, due to the immaturity of SDN in OpenStack we had to enhance the way that OpenStack dealt with SDN to meet the requirements of our production environment. We have developed our own distributed approach of deploying OpenFlow entries to achieve a rich set of services including isolated tenant networks, firewalls, anti-IP spoofing, inter-VM traffic optimization, and QoS.
Even with an initial success with SDN in our Cloud platform, we recognize the need for a more holistic approach in exploiting SDN. We would like to share our experiences of SDN in production with the OpenDaylight community, hoping that our findings can serve as meaningful input from a user’s perspective. We also would like to become involved in the development and growth of OpenDaylight as a user as well as a contributor.
